Research abstract

Current methods of transmitting low-frequency RF energy from airborne platforms involve antennas such as blades that are electrically inefficient and a place a large aerodynamic burden on the airframe. SOCOM desires a method of efficiently transmitting low-frequency energy (VHF-UHF) at high power levels from airborne platforms. The desired gain numbers (-2 to 0 dB) at these frequencies would require a blade antenna that would render the aircraft non-airworthy. FIRST RF is currently in production, at TRL 9, with an antenna that already meets SOCOM’s electrical specifications and that, with minor design modifications, can be easily adapted to SOCOM’s airborne needs. All of the proposed antenna configurations are dependent upon a similar, fully developed technology. Because the RF development of this antenna is at such an advanced stage, the Phase I efforts can focus on RF performance in the mounted configuration, aerodynamic impact, mechanical interfaces, and a commercialization strategy that includes a production plan. We approach SOCOM with a matrix of design solutions that trade performance parameters such as bandwidth, gain, aerodynamic cross-section and ease-of-installation. FIRST RF is committed to providing the most field-expedient solution. At the program kickoff meeting, we will deliver SOCOM a working prototype of the pylon antenna.
