Research abstract

Toyon Research Corporation proposes to develop an automated decision aid to allow commanders to make intelligent choices regarding the command and control of unmanned systems (UMS). The tool calculates the costs and benefits associated with allocating available UMS to investigate targets based upon sensor capabilities, platform speeds, target motion models, environmental features, geometry, and constraints based on fuel, time, and the need to maintain clear line of sight with a control station. The algorithm uses the costs and benefits to construct a matrix of possible decisions, including the assignment of multiple UMS to the same target. The matrix is solved using an assignment algorithm with acceptable computational cost to obtain the UMS allocation. This effort would build on the Phase I framework and develop more sophisticated models used calculating the costs and benefits of candidate assignments, including teaming situations. Throughout the Phase II effort, we will test our algorithms using SLAMEM™, Toyon’s high-fidelity battlefield simulation. Phase II will result in a prototype software application that will demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithm and provide technology that can be leveraged by Army programs for the tactical command of robotic entities.
