Research abstract

Military working dogs (MWDs) are a crucial force multiplier. Their impact and the resources required to replace them make proper care of upmost importance. Military handlers and veterinarians lack the time to continuously monitor the rest and recovery of MWDs after operations or rehabilitation after medical interventions. Charles River Analytics along with our partners at the Canine Performance Science Department at Auburn University propose a Stand-off Canine Observer for Recovery Evaluation (SCORE). SCORE uses noncontact and unobtrusive sensors to continuously gather behavioral and physiological data from the kennel environment. SCORE then detects signatures of rest and recovery and summarizes the recovery status for handlers and veterinarians, providing additional details to support decision-making.
