Research abstract

The current method used to produce domes for multimode seeker optics is to bond dome shells together with specialized adhesives following metal gridding on one inner surface. This is an expensive and time consuming process, and is not particularly suited to manufacturability. In particular, redundant machining steps are required to facilitate maximum optical transmission in this design. Additionally, the use of an organic bonding agent introduces a potential weak point in the design, because of concerns over optical, thermal cycling and/or aging issues. We propose herein a method by which a composite dome can be produced using a ceramic bonding agent. This technology would eliminate redundant machining steps and eliminate concerns related to organic bonding agents. Additionally, the envisioned process steps follow on existing ceramic production methods that are currently employed in production processes in other industries.
