Research abstract

Through discussions with Army ESA and DLA, Surmet has identified a transparent armor article for Source development through this SBIR program. Surmet is a developer, manufacturer and supplier of ALON® transparent armor products that provide substantial benefits in terms of weight, thickness, field durability, and situational awareness.  Through Phases I and II this SBIR program, Surmet plans to become an Approved Source for an item in this list, enabling participation in future DLA procurements. During Phase I, Surmet proposes to do engineering work and technical/business/cost analyses, and develop technical approach to meet each item in SAR checklist for the selected NSN list that represents substantial procurement potential. The follow-on Phase II program will include implementation of Phase I plan, manufacture and Qualification testing of articles per component purchase specification, and development of complete SAR package for approval by  DLA and Army. Phase II will also include performance-benefits, production cost, and TRL/MRL analyses. Surmet is supplier of transparent armor products, and is working closely with a number of Defense Prime Contractor OEMs. In addition to the identified Army ESA and DLA technical monitor, we will work closely with the relevant Prime Contractor as well as the System Program Office during Phases I and II.
