Research abstract

DRT will perform an investigation to identify a feasible design approach for a handheld threat warning and communications radio through the use of reconfigurable software radio techniques. Design aspects for the RF, digital, and power supply elements will undergo careful study in orer to identify customized integrated circuits that will minimize size, weight, and power consumpion. The aspects of mechanical design will be studied to find innovative ways for reliable and durable packaging of a mixed-signal product, as well as techniques for thermal management and ergonomic concerns. The system software architecture will be closely examined to identify the required functionality for both the requirements of processing needed for SIGINT radio operation, and the requirements for software radio architecture for use as a communications device. Finally, DRT plans to use the findings of this study to establish the development baseline if DRT is selected to receive the Phase II award.
