Research abstract

"Special Operations Forces require a small, lightweight and environmentally rugged system to conduct tactical missions to monitor wireless communications. The system must be easy to transport and deploy, and be capable of battery and remote operation. Thesystem must be cooled without relying on forced air techniques. The primary objective for phase I of this program is to examine in detail the technical aspects of the system architecture and generate a plan to develop the proposed system. Digital ReceiverTechnology (DRT) has successfully designed and produced receiving systems similar to the system specified under this proposal. Two systems, the DRT1501A and DRT1301B models, have technology directly applicable to the proposed system. The DRT1501A is aportable, battery-operated system developed for an environmentally challenging, tactical environment. The DRT1301B is a very small, lightweight, low power, battery-operated system developed for covert operations. Both systems employ an innovativemechanical design along with state-of-the-art electronics and software upgradeable architecture. In addition to applicable hardware design, DRT has developed proprietary software for the reception of the latest generation of wireless formats. Thesoftware is designed to run on standard Windows platforms and is field upgradable. One of the main benefits of this research and development effort will be the thermal design of the system.
