Research abstract

Simulator quality is often equated to the physical characteristics of hardware and software contained within the system. In conjunction with this practice, the term “fidelity” is often used to express compiled performance of various simulator components. In view of these comparisons, between mechanical parameters and software performance, it’s not unusual that fidelity requirements are sometimes based upon how much technology an organization can afford, instead of assessing technology levels needed for optimal training environments. Rather than base fidelity requirements solely upon inanimate parameters (optical, mechanical, and piezoelectric) SDS proposes development of a simulator fidelity analysis system that is based upon achievement of mission essential competency skills and biometric compatibility. The proposed Mission Essential Competencies Fidelity Analysis Tool (MECFAT) will use predetermined proficiency criteria to gauge how well specific requirements are met during simulated training evolutions. Using this approach, an ideal training model will be created for comparison with actual training experiences. This information will be integrated into a software package that permits scoring of fidelity criteria using a digital comparison of observed vs. desired training outcomes. Known bandwidths of aviation biometrics, related to human perceptual-cognition systems, will also be used to define simulator fidelity in terms of human compatibility.
