Research abstract

Training visualization skills can be difficult and inefficient in either the real world with natural representations or in a classroom with analog representations for several reasons. Field training requires physical relocation of trainees and is constrained by the nature of terrain and logistics available at the physical sites. Similarly, analog methods are often restricted to inflexible pictorials that afford little control over viewing perspective, environmental conditions and variety in the offering. In contrast, the application of digital methods to train and enhance visualization skills holds considerable promise. However, this has been a neglected area of research. In recognition of this fact, SDS proposes the development of a system for interactive training of a well-defined set of visualization skills. For this purpose, the system is designed to incorporate novel visualization technologies atop SDS’ proven platform for rendering high-resolution graphics. Furthermore, each visualization skill is to be trained using processes that may be applied consistently to yield accurate feedback such that, successive iterations of a process can be dynamically adjusted using this feedback to match the skill level of the trainee and facilitate a smooth learning curve with likely benefits.
