Research abstract

Sensors are playing an increasingly important role in the Navy fleet. The advantages of wireless sensors are numerous, but the drawback of requiring frequent battery replacement outweighs the advantages in most instances. Adding RF power scavenging permits either the removal of the battery, or at least extends the battery life to a useable time frame. Luna proposes a methodology to make RF power scavenging a viable alternative. Through a combination of improved efficencies in capturing and storing stray RF energy, and significantly decreasing the power requirement of the wireless sensor, Luna has determined that powering the sensors through scavenged energy will be possible within two years.
