Research abstract

During Phase I, Computational Sensors Corporation (CSC) developed a motion-based prototype algorithm for detecting missile maneuvers from the interceptor perspective using simulated inputs. One effective way to counter an anti-missile interceptor is simply to include one or more maneuvers during ascent. Development of a capability for reacting as quickly as possible to target maneuvers will provide an interceptor with critical counter-counter measure capability and is therefore of significant importance to the MDA boost-phase intercept program. In Phase II, CSC proposes to develop maneuver detection algorithms suitable to both exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric plumes, and implement the approaches in real-time hardware for hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) testing. Algorithm development goals include (1) the enhancement of the Phase I interceptor-based maneuver detection algorithm with an emphasis on robustness and (2) development of a new surveillance platform-based algorithm for endo-atmospheric maneuver detection. By the end of Phase II, robust, motion-based algorithms for missile maneuver detection suitable to late time-line exo-atmospheric plumes as imaged from an interceptor, as well as maneuver detection for low-altitude endo-atmospheric plumes as imaged from a surveillance platform (space-based and/or airborne sensing assets such as HALO and AIRS) will have been developed, implemented, and tested in prototype real-time hardware.
