Research abstract

Luna Innovations in cooperation with Michigan State University is developing lightweight, flame retardant packaging for large caliber ammunition. The proposed program involves 1) designing composite based packaging suitable for transport and storage of large, heavy, shock sensitive objects including large caliber ammunition 2) producing environmentally sound flame retardant, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for use as packaging materials and 3) providing FRP composite packaging demonstrating proposed package can be used by the military in the field. Luna has made a breakthrough in flame retardant additive improving the fire resistance of thermoset resins used in composite materials. The flame retardant technology will be advanced in a unique composite ammunition package. The package is designed for handling ease, palletizing and quick ammunition removal while minimizing material weight and cost.
