Research abstract

To address the Navyís need for innovative solid-state replacements for the MK99 T-1348 Radar Transmitter components, Intellisense proposes to develop the Agile Transmitter Enhancement for Naval AEGIS MK99 T-1348 Radar (ATHENA) system based on cutting-edge solid-state technologies. Specifically, ATHENA will replace the outdated electron and microwave tube technology with modern solid-state alternatives for the radio frequency (RF) oscillator multiplier, voltage regulator, and Control-Monitor subassembly while maintaining form, fit, and function requirements. The innovation in solid-state amplification and digital control systems will enable ATHENA to meet or exceed the existing functionality and performance parameters of the current T-1348 Transmitter used in the AEGIS Fire Control System (FCS) mission. This modernization will significantly decrease maintenance costs, reduce manpower requirements, and eliminate supply chain vulnerabilities associated with obsolete electron tube technologies. ATHENA is designed to conform to existing MK99 T-1348 Transmitter installations aboard DDG 51 Class ships, development and tactical sites, and international vessels, while meeting military specifications for shipboard equipment shock, vibration, airborne noise, and electromagnetic interference (MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461). In Phase I, Intellisense will perform detailed design studies and modeling to validate the feasibility of ATHENA components, building and testing a proof-of-concept prototype to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. In Phase II, we will develop and deliver fully functional prototypes for integration testing in relevant Navy environments and adopt Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and practices for supporting requirements traceability, analysis, and integration with other system models.
