Research abstract

In response to the N252-095 Phase I SBIR solicitation "AEGIS MK99 T-1348 Radar Transmitter Components Replacements," MaXentric proposes SPARTAN ("Solid-state Performance Architecture for Radar Transmitter Advancements in Naval Systems"). The proposed SPARTAN solution aims to replace the legacy electron and microwave tube-based transmitter chain of the Navyís radar system with cutting-edge, solid-state technologies. This modernization will enhance reliability, reduce maintenance, and improve overall performance. Specifically, the RF Oscillator Multiplier and Voltage Regulator will be replaced with customized Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) modules, tailored to meet spectrum agility and thermal constraints. The Control-Monitor subassembly will be upgraded with a ruggedized FPGA or microcontroller platform to handle fault detection, status reporting, and command interfacing with the DCC. Beyond upgrading these critical components, SPARTAN will replace the entire transmitter chain, including the final stage power amplifier, with a robust solid-state solution operating in the X/J bands. This ensures high output power levels necessary for modern radar operations. MaXentric will leverage its previous experience in spatially combining multiple solid-state power amplifiers (PAs), a proven technique for achieving high output powers while maintaining excellent efficiency and thermal management. The SPARTAN design adopts a modular architecture, allowing scalability to meet the specific output power requirements of any radar system, whether tactical or developmental. This innovative approach not only enhances system performance but also offers flexibility for future upgrades, accommodating diverse radar configurations across platforms. By transitioning to solid-state architecture, SPARTAN provides significant advantages over traditional analog and tube-based designs, including greater longevity, reduced power consumption, and improved thermal management.Ý
