Research abstract

The purpose of this proposal is to demonstrate the effectiveness of erosion resistant coatings for extending the life of shaft-driven compressor (SDC) impellers on the V-22 Osprey. Shaft-driven compressors are used on many aircraft to provide service to on-board inert/oxygen gas separators and environmental control systems, as well as other functions. The impellers in SDCs typically operated at from 87,000 to 100,000 revolutions per minute, at temperatures ranging from 125¢ª F to 600¢ª F. Aircraft that operate in sandy or dusty landing zones, or during dust and sand storms, have experienced rapid erosion of the SDC impeller leading to loss of critical functions and potentially catastrophic system failures. The goal of the project is to extend the impeller life by at least a factor of ten.
