Research abstract

The purpose of this project is to develop and demonstrate a chemically and mechanically robust coating system for sustained protection of engine compressor components, such as mating compressor stages, cases, and vane tracks, from corrosion in naval aero-engine operation. Four anti-corrosion coating systems will be applied on 17-4PH and Inconel 718 for evaluation. The coatings will be applied using an innovative Energetic Deposition Process (EDP) that produces a highly dense, smooth, and temperature and corrosion resistant coating that does not require post-deposition grinding or polishing.  Acree’s EDP coatings have a proven track record for corrosion protection and have been demonstrated to last over 1000 hours in salt spray corrosion tests conducted by the Navy at NAVAIR, Patuxent River. The coating method is non-line-of-sight and can uniformly coat complex shaped objects. Coupled samples, including coated and bare Ti-6Al-4V, will be subjected to coating adhesion, salt spray and mechanical testing.
