Research abstract

Electric propulsion is poised to play a significant role in future USAF aviation, offering new capabilities for tactical, transport, and logistics aircraft. Traditional electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) configurations have faced challenges due to battery limitations, inefficiencies, and operational constraints. Instead, electric Short Take-Off and Landing (eSTOL) aircraft present a viable alternative by significantly reducing required takeoff and landing areas (TOLA) while maintaining superior cruise efficiency. This Phase II effort focuses on advancing the Electric Lift Augmenting Slats (ELAS) system, a novel Propulsion Airframe Integration (PAI) technology that enhances low-speed performance using multiple Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) electric ducted fans (EDFs). ELAS generates substantial lift augmentation, improving takeoff, climb-out, descent, and landing performance, thereby addressing key Air Force operational challenges in austere environments.Building upon successful NASA-funded demonstrations on a 2,000 lb airframe, this Phase II initiative aims to refine ELAS for integration into a 4,500 lb aircraft capable of carrying seven passengers, four stretchers, or 1,700 lbs of cargo. This effort will involve structural modifications, system integration, flight testing, and performance validation. The work will directly support the Air Force’s need for enhanced tactical mobility, enabling aircraft to operate in constrained environments with minimal infrastructure. The ELAS technology represents a near-term, scalable solution that leverages existing aircraft designs and COTS components, reducing transition barriers for DoD adoption. With significant commercial potential in general aviation, emergency response, and logistics, ELAS offers a pragmatic pathway toward the broader adoption of electric propulsion in military and civilian applications.
