Research abstract

AVATAR Partners, Inc (AVATAR) submits EOD_XR Dual Mode Immersive Training Platform for enhanced Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Training. Traditional methods like "blow in place" no longer suffice for EOD technicians handling complex ordnance scenarios. EOD_XR, built upon the Unity-based XRcreate® authoring software, employs high-fidelity 3D models and augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) to deliver immersive AR/VR/MR content accessible across multiple devices, including VR/XR headsets, iOS & Android phones and tablets, and PC.The dual-mode solution incorporates Open Space Mode for classroom-based training using 3D digital models, and Real Environment Mode for hands-on training with precision overlays on actual equipment. The platform's AI features, AIcreate® and AIcoach®, facilitate content production and provide intelligent feedback, enhancing training effectiveness. EOD_XR is the only platform that adheres to the International Mixed Reality Standards Association (IMRSA) for data-tagging, ensuring interoperability and standardization across XR applications. EOD_XR data resides on a “Government Community Cloud (GCC) High” server that adheres to DoD Impact Level 5.AVATAR employs the PADDIE Instructional Design Systems framework and Agile Methodologies, ensuring iterative development and user feedback integration. The project involves collaboration with subcontractors R3 Strategic Support Group and CR Access Consulting, leveraging their expertise in EOD and Army Modeling & Simulation. AVATAR builds on its successful track record with projects like the USMC EOD_AR and USCG Augmented Reality Maintenance Aid, demonstrating the potential to revolutionize EOD training across the Department of Defense. The EOD_XR platform represents a transformative step in EOD training, offering a comprehensive, immersive solution that enhances technician readiness and operational effectiveness.
