Research abstract

Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI), utilizing patented Microlith® substrates, has demonstrated small, modular reactors for reforming liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon fuels at exceptionally high power densities. During Phase I, in addition to demonstrating efficient JP-8 and Diesel reforming capability, PCI successfully integrated the fuel injection, mixing and vaporization within the catalytic reactor by taking advantage of the Microlith technology’s ability to impede soot formation, its diffusive capabilities to boost mixing, and its high surface area to augment vaporization, resulting in a Microlith Reactor for Gasification and Reforming (MRGR). The size of the 10-kWe ATR was 6in3 (0.1l). The catalyst was successfully tested in dry and wet mode, with multiple fuels, and was fully operational in 1 minute. The MRGR was shown to be sulfur tolerant and coke resistant for the test duration. During Phase II, PCI is proposing to develop and demonstrate a standalone, 5-kWe prototype reformer operating on low-sulfur diesel. The MRGR reformate will be tested with a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell to advance toward a “logistic-fuel to electrons” device. A model for the entire APU will be developed. Additionally, it is capable of meeting multi-service needs, and a Navy-ONR Option has been added to deliver a 50 kWe MRGR.
