Research abstract

Current lead-acid battery systems in military vehicles are increasingly unable to support the full array of onboard electrical sensors, to endure the stringent demands of "silent-watch" operation, and to maintain reliable cold weather vehicle starting required by 21st-century missions. In this Phase I, Mainstream addressed these issues by demonstrating an advanced lithium-ion battery and ultracapacitor, both comprised of carbon nanotube electrodes manufactured using a new proprietary process invented by Mainstream. The Phase I results were extremely encouraging with the battery electrodes demonstrating a capacity of 5800 mAh/g of carbon (16 times that of normal carbon!) and the ultracapacitor electrodes demonstrating an energy storage capacity that was 18 times that of normal ultracapacitor electrodes. Projections show a full-scale prototype system will deliver more energy and power from a lighter and smaller package, and because of Mainstream's new production process, will do so for the same cost. This Phase II is designed to extend the work of the Phase I to develop a full-scale prototype system for installation and testing in a military heavy-duty vehicle. To this end, Mainstream has already secured working partnerships with commercial battery and ultracapacitor manufacturers to assist in aspects of the design not related to the electrodes.
