Research abstract

Current deployable water filtration systems like the Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC) Small Unit Water Purifier (SUWP) are unable to meet the stringent flow, purity, power, and instant availability desired by the U.S. Army. Mainstream Engineering will develop and demonstrate a Compact, Deployable Water Purification System (D-WPS) based on our previously designed Greywater Recycling System for Army Field Kitchens and Wastewater Purification System for Navy Ships. The D-WPS will produce >50 GPH of immediately drinkable water from freshwater at <1.75 kW (<35 Wh/gal) and be powered from on-board 28 V DC supply available on light-duty vehicles. The estimated base system weight is 90 lb with option modules including an AC/DC converter for generator use, a mineralization cartridge, and a CBRN purification cartridge. In Phase I, we will prove out the theoretical energy efficiency, model operation for freshwater, brackish, and saltwater sources before building and demonstrating a full-scale prototype. In Phase II, will fully validate, ruggedize, evaluate, and deliver a prototype D-WPS system.
