Research abstract

The aggregation of entities can be a practical approach for managing large-scale simulation exercises and improving performance. However, aggregation is not easy to implement and universally apply by the players within a federation. Furthermore, models used to represent entities and interactions are not typically built with aggregation in mind. Aggregation capable models are needed, which would allow model coupling representing differing levels of resolution. A promising technology that encourages the representation of combined model sets and the application of multi-resolution models are Base Object Models (BOMs). For the Phase I effort, SimVentions researched, designed and prototyped a BOM Aggregation Framework (BAF) to facilitate unit aggregation and de-aggregation. For Phase II, SimVentions proposes to further develop a BAF specification intended as a web-service in order to provide automation such as dynamic distribution of BOMs dialed to a fidelity need, and the ability to perform pattern and instance aggregation. Additional capabilities include execution monitoring for providing automatic aggregation and deaggregation triggering, transfer control support of entities extracted from partial deaggregations, and the delivery of model-to-model transformations for supporting adaptability. In addition, a BOM Aggregate Support Server (BASS) will be developed as a BAF specification implementation to be offered to the community.
