Research abstract

Command and Control, Battle Management and Communications (C2BMC) for Missile Defense systems, including Ground-based Midcourse (GMD) and the global Ballistic Missile Defense System must be able to utilize available data sources to detect, track, discriminate, and destroy an enemy missile in a manner of minutes, if not seconds. Latency requirements for these systems are on the order of tens of seconds down to subseconds. In order to achieve the performance required by these information management systems, this Phase II effort will develop a seamless Communications Infrastructure that (1) supports shared memory communications in order to better handle multi-processor clients, and (2) provides a self-diagnostic capability at the routers (servers) that can route critical messages by sensing network congestion and connectivity and provide a capability to "tune" the network. This Communications Infrastructure can be used to reduce data latencies across distributed environments while providing a path to grow as the GMD system expands to consider mobile platforms and new users, including the transition to Link-16 and IPv6 protocols. This effort will investigate this integration process and benchmark the Communication Infrastructure across distributed computing and information management environments used in support of missile defense applications.
