Research abstract

Black River Systems Co., Inc. and Syracuse Research Corporation propose to continue development of medium earth orbit bistatic space-based radar concepts with emphasis upon innovative space-time adaptive processing algorithms, augmented with knowledge-aided signal processing, to achieve high detection probability and low false alarm rates in the presence of severe clutter, jamming and dense target environments. The primary emphasis during Phase II includes: (1) adapting the recently conceived, novel STAP methods that we began to explore during Phase I and extend them during Phase II, with application to MEO bistatic SBR architectures, (2) evaluating the recently developed Modified Adaptive Angle-Doppler Compensation algorithm with respect to bistatic space-based radar through extensive simulation, (3) extending the knowledge-aided signal/data processing techniques, including the detection and tracking functions, (4) prototyping algorithms and demonstrating feasibility of bistatic space-based radar STAP architectures, augmented with knowledge-aided signal/data processing, via simulation using realistic antenna and environmental models, (5) evaluating bistatic STAP performance using measured data, when available, (6) assessing the computational complexity, including computational latency requirements of the resultant signal/data processing algorithms, (7) integrating the algorithms into an end-to-end simulation testbed, and validating performance under a variety of geometries and geo-specific environments.
