Research abstract

Transparent ALON polycrystalline ceramic is a durable window material currently under development for high energy lasers (HEL) operating at near infrared wavelengths (NIR). ALON has high transparency, high strength and hardness and can be economically scaled to large widow sizes up to 600 mm diameter. Methods of reducing the optical absorption and scatter have been developed which will allow ALON to be used for this application. These methods must be scaled from laboratory size specimens to full size windows for demonstration of the capabilities of ALON optical ceramic for HEL windows. In this Phase II development effort the laboratory processes developed in Phase I will be scaled to 340 mm diameter windows and processes for large window blank production and optical fabrication will be developed.
