Research abstract

The Aegis Combat System (ACS) currently interacts with unmanned air systems (UAS) through isolated ground control systems requiring manual transcription for any control or data communication with the combat system. This limited integration and interoperability results in underutilization of UAS sensor data and inefficient tasking of UAS to accomplish ACS mission objectives. To enable more effective interoperability of UAS within the ACS, PSI proposes to develop the Scalable, Extensible Adapter/Router for Unmanned Systems (SEARUS) - a new software service that provides seamless, secure, and extensible integration between UAS and the ACS. By bridging the current communication gap between UAS and ACS¨óincluding translating UAS-specific protocols (e.g. MAVLink, STANAG 4586, etc.) and legacy communication standards (e.g. Link-16, Cooperative Engagement Capability, Link 11/22, etc.)óSEARUS will enable a unified operational picture, improve situation awareness, mission flexibility, and the speed of decision-making. Built on microservice architecture and flexible configuration-driven rulesets, SEARUS will securely route and dynamically integrate UAS and the ACS data streams to reduce operational inefficiency. Additionally, this solution will improve maintenance and low manpower requirements for operating both UAS and ACS systems. As a result, a wide variety of UAS can operate as integrated sensors within the ACS, enabling real-time processing and utilization of their data to support mission operations.
