Research abstract

High energy density capacitors will serve various commercial and military applications, such as high energy x-rays, impulse generators, controlled nuclear fusion, and directed energy weapons, However, today's capacitors, especially high energy density storage capacitors, are the weakest link in power electronic system reliability. For many military and industrial power electronic systems, capacitors with several orders of magnitude improvement in energy density are needed. Boston Applied Technologies Incorporated (BATI) proposed an innovative and low-cost technology to fabricate novel nanostructured electrolytes for high power capacitors. In the completed Phase I program, BATI have successfully achieved and exceeded the proposed objectives. Major performance parameters of capacitor have been significantly improved through a revolutionary planar boundary nanostructure. BATI is ready to extend the success of the Phase I program into a challenging Phase II and develop a manufacturable process for the planar boundary nanostructured electrolyte and power capacitors. Capacitors made from the proposed planar boundary nanostructured electrolyte is capable to be at least 5 times higher volumetric efficiency than those current state-of-the-art power capacitors. BATI is committed to bring this new generation of nanostructured capacitors to the marketplace for military and industry applications.
