Research abstract

Legacy military hardware systems can be 20-40 years old or older.  Many include printed circuit boards that have integrated circuits (ICs) that are obsolete and are no longer manufactured or available. Unfortunately, newer ICs are typically designed for low voltage (<2 V) inputs and are not backward compatible with older designs using 3.3 V or 5 V inputs.  This makes maintenance and repair for legacy military hardware extremely difficult, and in the worst cases, nearly impossible, requiring prohibitively costly electronic redesigns.  TDA and our partners at the University of Utah will develop a custom embedded FPGA (eFPGA) that can run on both 3.3V and 5V inputs.  The eFPGA will be small enough to fit in a wide array of IC packages so that it can emulate obsolete ICs and act as a drop-in replacement for them to ease the repair and maintenance of legacy electronic hardware.
