Research abstract

Abstract:This SBIR Phase II proposal entitled, "COTS Affordable Data Link System (CADLS) for Telemetry and Flight Safety" builds on the successful results of the Phase I feasibility study sponsored by the MDA and managed by the AFFTC, Edwards AFB. The Phase I study results demonstrated that range telemetry and flight safety data link requirements of a secure, spectrally efficient data link solution offering higher data rates (up to 2 MB/sec), broader coverage (up to 160 nmi) including coverage for over-the-horizon missions, and support for multiple (up to 25) simultaneous data users can be met by the proposed CADLS system. The CADLS system architecture, adapts the next generation commercial wireless technology, streamlines it, and integrates it with a space-based satellite radio access network to provide a seamless economic solution for meeting the range telemetry and flight safety requirements over broad coverage area . The CADLS system will support the test and evaluation needs of MDA guided ballistic missiles and DoD advanced air platforms including unmanned vehicles. The CADLS Phase II program will design, build, test and deliver a prototype Radio Access Network solution consisting of multiple mobile UEs and ground radio transceivers to demonstrate the unique features of the CADLS architecture through a field test at a government test range.
