Research abstract
The U.S. Marine Corps currently relies on outdated thermal weapon sights for their medium and heavy machine guns (M240B 7.62mm, M2HB 12.7mm, and Mk19 40mm). These legacy systems lack modern fire control and targeting capabilities and require separate day and night optics, resulting in increased logistical burdens, weight, and training complexity. The absence of integrated fire control solutions also reduces first-round hit probability, increases ammunition consumption, and limits operational effectiveness in dynamic combat environments. Pixels On Target proposes an advanced integrated day/night weapon sight that combines thermal and visible light capabilities with modern fire control. This system will optimize performance across all lighting conditions, minimize weight, and support multiple weapon platforms while reducing lifecycle costs. The goal is to provide the Marine Corps with a decisive combat advantage, enhancing accuracy, mobility, and operational efficiency. Upon successful completion of Phase I, the program will advance to Phase II prototype development with an emphasis on: System Integration and Field Testing:Prototype refinement based on Phase I modeling results.Conducting live-fire evaluations with prototype units. Manufacturability and Cost Optimization:Partnering with defense manufacturers for production scalability.Refining cost models to ensure affordability for wide-scale adoption. Transition to other DoD Procurement Programs and Allies:Aligning with US Army, US Navy, US AF and USSOCOM modernization initiatives.Exploring commercialization opportunities for law enforcement and allied forces. The results of Phase I will serve as the foundation for Phase II prototype development and eventual fielding, ensuring that U.S. Marine Corps machine gunners receive the most advanced, lightweight, and reliable targeting system possible today.
