Research abstract

The proposed Faraday tent solution will be a larger form factor and a significant adaptation of SLNT’s current commercial offerings with new technical components and manufacturing techniques that include a magnetic RF-tight door entry (adapted from current patented Silent Pocket RF-seal), RF Bandpass, earth grounding, collapsibility, packability, wearability and deployability in seconds. Under this Phase II effort, SLNT will develop multiple Faraday tent variants based on the AFSPECWAR operator requirements that range from a lightweight desktop tent to a field deployable, standalone 2-man tent.  Using similar materials found in SLNT bags, backpacks, and pouches, the SLNT team will adapt the core technology into an RF-protected, thermal blended, acoustic blocking haven for dismounted warfighters in the field.  Additionally, SLNT will leverage this technological foundation to propose a complementary Faraday wearable solution, such as a flight jacket and suit, integrating the same RF-shielding materials and techniques. This wearable adaptation will provide Air Force personnel with individual EMI protection, cybersecurity, and rapid deployability, enhancing operational resilience in contested environments while aligning with the tent’s portability and field-ready design. SLNT’s Intellectual Property (IP) and technical methodology through Computer Aided-Design (CAD) tools like Solidworks will allow us to build more complex and technical products like the proposed Tent solutions while maintaining full efficacy of the desired functionality. SLNT will use all advanced manufacturing capabilities at hand such as high-frequency dielectric welding, technical sewing, laser cutting, and 3D printing for prototype fabrication. Using SLNT’s partners Keystone Compliance, MIT Lincoln Labs (MITLL), Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA) SLNT will be able to stress test the prototypes at every stage of development to make sure that the Faraday Tent maintains benchmark metrics of full or selective RF signal attenuation, thermal reduction, and physical integrity for designated materials and prototypes. SLNT will be field testing with 1 ASOG Airmen who will simulate real world scenarios ensuring that the tent performs above and beyond in all requirements. The RF testing systems at MITLL specifically have Anechoic chambers with the ability to cover a Radar cross section (RCS) of 800MHz - 100GHz. SLNT will test the proposed Faraday tent solution as well as stand alone materials in the most dynamic and comprehensive ways possible. These same facilities are used to test Department of the Air Force (DAF) aircraft and other vehicles and is widely regarded as the pinnacle of RF Testing Facilities.
