Research abstract

In the Phase I project, Bhawin LLC aims to develop an innovative solution for the fabrication, production, and processing of optical quality lithium niobate substrates. Lithium niobate (LiNbO3) substrates are pivotal in photonics, telecommunications, and optoelectronics due to their exceptional electro-optic, piezoelectric, and nonlinear optical properties. However, current fabrication methods face challenges in achieving high optical quality, precise stoichiometry, and cost efficiency, which limits their scalability and broader application. This project focuses on developing an innovative solution for the fabrication, production, and processing of optical-quality LN substrates. Utilizing advanced techniques such as Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP), and optimized thin-film deposition, the process will ensure superior crystalline quality, reduced defects, and customizable substrate properties tailored for specific applications. The approach will also emphasize environmental sustainability and cost reduction through efficient material utilization and reduced energy consumption. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and UV-Vis spectroscopy, will validate the structural, optical, and surface properties of the LN substrates. The proposed technology aims to revolutionize LN substrate production, enabling scalable manufacturing for high-performance optical systems, integrated photonics, and emerging quantum technologies while addressing key market demands and fostering innovation across industries. On a follow-on Phase-II project, this technology will be commercialized by a leading optical device manufacturer who is very much interested in this technology.
