Research abstract

This Phase II effort will design and field test the first Wiring Inspection and Troubleshooting System (WITS). WITS uniquely integrates multiple sensor technologies and automatic database functions into one near-autonomous system that will save many hoursof inspection and troubleshooting. MSI demonstrated in Phase I that WITS identifies and locates opens and shorts in harnesses, and can identify some faulty line-replaceable units. We also demonstrated WITS automatically running inspections and logging theresults in a database. The Phase II work will greatly expand the Phase I concept by detecting additional wire fault types, adding troubleshooting procedures, building aircraft adapter sets, and adding a maintenance site server. WITS will be tested oncustomer-selected aircraft harnesses (T-38, A-10, or T-37). The target unit price is $5,000, and the key to reaching the target is COTS parts. The initial application is USAF OO-ALC aging aircraft, but WITS is useful for any vehicle or equipment withlarge wiring harnesses: military and commercial aircraft ground vehicles (tanks, trucks, trains), factory equipment, and more. We have coordinated our commercialization team, and it is ready to carry WITS into a long-term product.
