Research abstract

We propose to explore a mid-infrared free-space optical communication (FSOC) concept suited for environments where electromagnetic interference must be minimized, such as an aircraft carrier flight deck. Our approach aims to maintain data connectivity even amid shifting structures and frequent obstructions. Using quantum cascade lasers and compatible mid-IR detectors, we will evaluate how our solution can deliver sufficient data throughput while meeting strict safety and emissions guidelines. Phase?I will focus on validating the basic feasibility, designing an initial hardware concept, and outlining how the proposed approach can scale into a robust solution for real-world deck operations.
