Research abstract

Hitron Technologies, Inc. (HTI) proposes to develop a non-line-of-sight Solar Blind UV Channel Based Wireless Communication (SoBuCOM) System to enable secure, encrypted communication links for devices used on aircraft carrier flight decks without the concern of electromagnetic interference. The use of transceivers will allow two-way and multiple-user communications. In Phase I, SoBuCOM system will be designed through optical system simulation, and a proof-of-concept breadboard prototype will be developed based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components including high power deep UV LEDs, highly sensitive photon-counting detectors, incident angle insensitive and high contrast solar blind filters, and signal processing electronics. Performance testing will be conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the SoBuCOM concept and basic networking capability and to establish the expected performance characteristics of a fully functional engineering prototype system to be developed in Phase II.
