Research abstract
The U.S. Navy is seeking development of alternative wireless communication technologies for aircraft carrier flight deck environments where traditional RF communications are limited or restricted due to electromagnetic interference and emissions control requirements. To address this Navy need, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop a new Secure Non-line-of-Sight Agile Wireless Communications for Flight Deck (SHARK) system, based on a new design that utilizes previously developed state-of-the-art components. Specifically, the innovation in mmW (millimeter-Wave) data transmission will enable SHARK to support wireless connectivity between both mobile and autonomous devices to a small number of base stations that cover the entire carrier flight deck without susceptibility from, or interference of, radio frequency (RF) systems and other hazards. As a result, SHARK will meet Navy requirements to operation within the highly electromagnetically challenging flight deck environment in all-weather conditions while also providing low probability of detection and interception (LPD/LPI), directly addressing Navy requirements. In Phase I, Intellisense will (1) define and develop a concept for wireless connectivity within an air-capable shipboard environment that eliminates or reduces RF emissions; (2) perform an initial assessment of the technology through modeling and simulation or in a lab setting where data is sent between a minimum of two devices using the wireless medium; and (3) provide a plan to expand the technology to a local area network. The Phase I effort will include prototype plans to be developed under Phase II. In Phase II, we will further enhance the design and develop a prototype wireless network of devices using a wireless medium that eliminates or reduces RF emissions; we will also assess the probability of detection and test results for latency, data rates, and reliability. Intellisense will provide the documentation on hardware architecture and device drivers.
