Research abstract

The cost-effective design of future high performance complex aerospace systems spanning incompressible to hypersonic flow regimes requires highly accurate simulations of coupled multidisciplinary problems that involve fluid-structure interaction withturbulence, magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) effects, complex vortex interactions and finite-rate chemistry, aeroelasticity, aero-heating, acoustics and free surface capture. HyPerComp, Inc., in collaboration with Prof. Stanley Osher of Levelset Systems Inc.,proposes to develop a new generation of multiphysics simulation tools with spectral-like accuracy by building on the strengths of our current TEMPUS (Time-Domain EM Parallel Unstructured Simulator) environment for Computational Electromagnetics (CEM). Webase our high order work on the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) technique that has already shown tremendous benefits in CEM. In phase-I we demonstrated this method for test problems in magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) and investigated the effects of implicit timestepping, slope limiters, and the presence of source terms for schemes up to 4th order. In phase-II, we intend to enhance the high order DG algorithms to at least 10th order with inclusion of high order geometry and boundary conditions, and apply it to aselection of multidisciplinary problems in three dimensions. In addition, our expertise in moving and adaptive mesh generation will be applied to enhance these solutions and pave the way for problems with variable/morphing geometry.
