Research abstract

Our firm, Chestnut Ridge Foam, Inc., understands the gravity of improving sleep conditions for the US Navy, particularly with mattresses. As an industry leader in the manufacture of fire-resistant foam cushioning, we are fully capable of developing a prototype for a mattress that will undoubtably improve comfort and quality of sleep for the personnel aboard Naval vessels.   For 39 years, Chestnut Ridge Foam has been producing foam cushioning for various industries including: corrections, aviation, surface transportation, healthcare, universities, and military. We specialize in foam cushioning that provides comfort in combination with superior flammability performance.  We have been one of the suppliers to the National Industries for the Blind, for their contracts with the US Navy since 1986. We are well versed in government contracts, understanding the demands for mattress production, as well as the necessary internal testing and required documentation.  The current mattress supplied to the US Navy has been a source of contention for many years and long overdue for improvements in comfort and quality of sleep. Our objective is to develop a mattress that can be comfortable to the occupant while maintaining the necessary dimensional constraints and the exceptional fire performance characteristics. We intend to prove the increased comfort through several measures including internal laboratory testing for firmness and other physical properties, external testing for durability and pressure mapping parameters, as well as a detailed research plan from our investigating sleep research team.  Our approach is to work with our CR SAFGUARD XL cushioning material. CR SAFGUARD XL is a highly fire-resistant open cell foam cushioning that was created for comfortable seating applications, with a significant need for durability. Used primarily within rail and bus for transit seating, CR SAFGUARD XL is produced in various levels of firmness which can be refined in the prototype development. We plan to create a dual-firmness mattress design not only for optimum comfort, but to allow the occupant a choice of softness to ensure a restful night’s sleep. Carl Ogburn, President of Chestnut Ridge Foam, will be appointed Principal Investigator of this task. With over 45 years of experience in the foam cushioning industry, he has worked on countless prototypes and research endeavors which led to the betterment of mattresses and seat cushioning for both private and government industries.  A recent achievement was the development and subsequent production of a dual firmness seat bottom for the new US Army MPF mobile tank being manufactured by General Dynamics.  Our firm is committed to the development and implementation of an improved shipboard mattress for the US Navy. We look forward to the challenge ahead and welcome the opportunity to enhance the sleeping conditions for our valuable service men and women.
