Research abstract
Through the proposed Navy STTR program, MacroVation, in collaboration with Virginia Tech’s Chemical Engineering Department and Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, and Sleep Pods for the Military, LLC, will develop a functionally graded viscoelastic silicone foam mattress that introduces a critical design advancement to MIL-PRF-32568-compliant shipboard mattresses while operationally replacing the existing neoprene cushion pad and innerspring coil system. This next-generation mattress will significantly enhance Sailor sleep quality, reduce fatigue and recovery, and improve operational readiness by leveraging the superior mechanical resilience, pressure distribution, and motion isolation properties of viscoelastic silicone foams. Unlike traditional innerspring mattresses, which rely on metal coil supports and polychloroprene foams, MacroVation’s novel two-layer functionally graded silicone foam system will provide progressive support, adaptive comfort, and long-term durability without mechanical fatigue or material degradation. MacroVation’s viscoelastic, functionally graded silicone foam mattress will be molecularly engineered and empirically refined to meet the dimensional, mechanical, and safety requirements of MIL-PRF-32568. The mattress design will retain all MIL-PRF-32568-compliant components, including the quilted upholstery, flange, insulator fabric, and border materials, ensuring seamless integration within the Navy’s existing mattress specifications. Further, MacroVation’s proposed functionally graded silicone foams will be created from biologically inert, non-toxic silicone precursors, ensuring that the materials meet the highest standards of safety and biocompatibility. Further, the closed-cell dominated morphology of MacroVation’s silicone foams will ensure complete buoyancy, a critical safety feature in shipboard environments. This approach will afford a drop-in replacement solution that maintains compliance while delivering unparalleled improvements in sleep quality and resilience. Furthermore, this technology is commercially scalable, with a clear transition path to existing toll manufacturing and injection molding equipment, allowing for efficient production at scale and reducing barriers to full deployment within the Navy. In collaboration with Virginia Tech’s Chemical Engineering Department and Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, and Sleep Pods for the Military, LLC, this Phase I STTR program will establish the scientific and engineering foundation for the development, manufacturing, and full-scale integration of MacroVation’s silicone foam mattress technology throughout the Navy fleet. By leveraging state-of-the-art material science, scalable manufacturing techniques, and human sleep performance research, MacroVation will enable the Navy to transition toward a next-generation shipboard mattress solution that meets mission-critical requirements for improved sleep quality, safety, and durability.
