Research abstract

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has identified a need for new shipboard mattresses that will result in enhanced comfort for improved sleep quality, well-being, and reduced fatigue-induced mishaps in high-risk military environments. In this STTR program, NanoSonic will develop new natural mattress materials and designs engineered with thermal neutral and vibratory comfort for uninterrupted sleep with input from the Crew Endurance Team in the Operations Research Department at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). In response to Government Accountability Office, medical, and Navy research findings regarding Sailor input on uncomfortable mattresses, NanoSonic shall produce cost effective mattresses based on three operative concepts: a natural, durable, breathable casing, a bio-based fiber and thermoregulating reinforced, non-toxic, zero-odor, flame-resistant foam with reliable and adaptable vibratory comfort for the continuous dynamic tight berthing compartments onboard ships, and a physical stand-off shaped design to promote a swaddle-like hammock effect while preventing overheating and accommodating physical features and sleeping positions for all Sailors and Marines.  NanoSonic offers expertise in each of these areas through scalable supple, high-temperature foams delivered to multiple customers and our reusable insulation for Navy’s Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) validated for full-scale fire resistance (MIL-STD-3020). We have also teamed with HotFlash (HF), LLC who offers expertise on a wearable device that provides an algorithm for human feedback on their effective thermoregulating blanket.   Together, NanoSonic, NPS, and HF shall deliver a new mattress designed to meet the dimensional requirements and standards in MIL-PRF-32586 for a Phase II human subjects research study plan based on polysomnography, wearable devices, and subjective assessments.
