Research abstract

nP Technology (nP) will design, develop, build, and demonstrate a ballistically stable 7.62x51 projectile/cartridge that meets the Phase-1 objectives, and can be used in all current 7.62x51 / .308 service weapons.ÝThe proposed approach utilizes nPís proven scalable molded-projectile technology, and nPís history of successfully integrating various payloads into these projectiles for various desired on-target effects, including SoT, precision energetics, and controlled penetration & energy dispersion.ÝnP proposes an integrated-technology projectile, with discrete-element cargo contained and positioned precisely within the projectile, as well as energetics homogenously distributed throughout the projectile. nP will also explore multi-piece projectiles that can be configured to address specific targets, with a long-term option of field-configurability. Additionally, nP will demonstrate an ability to penetrate a range of targets, from forged steel 155mm artillery shells, to mild steel cases/barriers. Phase-1 projectiles will utilize inert surrogate materials to demonstrate ballistic stability and accuracy.ÝThe Proposed Approach starts with nP COTS molded Low Collateral 7.62x51 projectiles, ranging from 1.000î ñ 1.200î in length, 0.976 ñ 1.195 cm3Ýin volume, and 90-220 grains in weight, all within SAAMI specifications. This approach will succeed because the foundational technology is well-proven and scalable at nP.ÝImportantly, nP brings experience engineering and integrating micro/nano-scale particles into moldable materials and as projectile cargo. The energy densities and molecular-coating options at these small-particle scales provide significant engineering headroom for current and future objectives. nP has the capability, with our in-house laboratories, to synthesize, mix, and characterize particles and compounds.ÝUtilizing order-of-effects control, nP has demonstrated extraordinary capabilities, including breaching without explosives by properly applying dispersion of kinetic energy, as well as harnessing kinetic energy dispersion to generate energetic-material reactions. This enables nP to explode on the exterior or interior of ordnance, and destroy wires or other means of electrical connectivity on or within specified ordnance, or detonate the explosive. The order-of-effects control has also been used to create holes in mild steel that are 3X the cross-sectional area of the projectile, demonstrating a progressive and uniform radial distribution of high-energy reactive materials throughout the area/volume immediately behind the metal casing/barrier.ÝFor rapid and effective proof-of-concept and prototyping of projectiles, nP has molding machines, modular molds, swiss screw machines to precisely machine projectile components for multi-piece projectiles, and all required weapon systems. nP has an FFL Type-10, explosives licenses, a private 2400-acre test facility, and in-house capabilities required for successful Phase 1-3 Objectives.
