Research abstract

The Department of the Air Force faces a critical training gap. Most current simulators remain configured for Global War on Terror (GWOT) scenarios and do not reflect modern threats such as entrenched positions, swarming drones, or combined-arms tactics. As the Air Force shifts to Agile Combat Employment (ACE) and trains Multi-Capable Airmen, there is a need for adaptive systems that reflect today’s near-peer adversary environment. Existing training does not replicate the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) seen in current conflicts, leaving Airmen unprepared for combat conditions they are likely to face.Orama Technologies addresses this gap with its Mixed Reality Combat Simulator (MRCS). MRCS is a portable, AI-powered training system that fuses live physical movement with virtual, threat-based scenarios. The system includes mixed-reality headsets, haptic vests, and weapon-mounted sensors to track actions and simulate real-world effects. MRCS uses real combat data to train its AI adversaries and adjusts in real time based on trainee behavior. It supports immersive, team-based training in Modular Small Arms Ranges (MSARs), shoot houses, and austere locations. This Direct to Phase II effort will refine AI adversary models, improve integration with live intelligence, and ensure system compatibility with existing Air Force and Air National Guard infrastructure.
