Research abstract

Mainstream Engineering proposes to develop a family of CO2 (R744) modular refrigeration systems (cMRS) that will modernize fleet refrigeration capabilities, reduce environmental impact, and improve reliability and maintainability. Mainstream currently produces a very similar modular refrigeration unit (MRU) for the U.S. Military. Using our current product as a baseline and adapting the interfaces, and components to accommodate the high-pressure refrigerant and existing refrigerated ship stores, we can shorten the development time and offer the Navy a more reliable product. During Phase I, we will finalize the cycle design, explore efficient heat exchangers, and build a prototype 0.75 tonR cMRS with simplified controls. We will validate the performance under representative conditions and measure actual leak rates at high pressure conditions.
