Research abstract

72579S03-I There is a need for in-situ, real time monitoring of complex industrial gas mixtures under harsh conditions, such as elevated temperatures, pressures, and corrosive environments. This project will develop an array-based sensor containing a suite of molecular sieves as the functional materials for combustion gaseous analysis. Reliability, sensitivity, stability, and affordability all will be achieved under harsh conditions. In Phase I, a lab scale sensor unit will be fabricated using molecular sieves as sensory materials. Finally, the performance of the sensor in combustion gas analysis will be evaluated at simulated conditions. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology could be utilized for air quality and environmental monitoring, process control, food processing, and medical measurements. Military applications include the detection of explosives and chemical/biological warfare agents.
