Research abstract

Exquadrum’s team proposes innovative thermal storage system RAMEN-HPMOP, an on-demand micro-climate control in closed-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus (CC-SCBA). The proposed device uses phase change materials (PCM). It is light-weight, compact, has significantly higher thermal storage capacity and is easy to integrate in the state-of-the-art system currently used in commercial CC-SCBA. RAMEN-HPMOP meets and exceeds US Army’s goal of reducing thermal burden, enhance longevity, and improved warfighter efficiency. It meets and exceeds NIOSH standard for CC-SCBAs (42 CFR 84.103) by maintaining air below 350C with 50-100% relative humidity. This thermal storage concept has both a technical and business pathway to introduction into the existing fleet of commercially available CC-SCBA by retrofitting a small component in the form of a clip-on device.
