Research abstract

During the proposed Phase I research and development effort, the project team will demonstrate the feasibility of a breakthrough in propellant formulation that provides safe ignition in response to a specialized electrical input. This technology will enable real-time thrust control of tactical solid propellant rocket motors that achieves the US Navy’s vision for collaborative munitions where in-flight missiles can be redirected and throttled to engage evolving threats. Maturity of the individual components will be assessed relative to the development needed for use in a solid propellant rocket motor. A technology maturation plan will be written to guide Phase II and follow-on development efforts. The Phase I effort will include prototype plans to be developed under Phase II.
