Research abstract

This project will develop and evaluate a new process for converting algae-derived vegetable oil into a renewable diesel-like aviation fuel. The process uses a new approach to hydro-deoxygenation (HDO) and does not produce any unwanted glycerol as a by-product (as does the conventional biodiesel process). The liquid fuel will be analyzed by gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis to determine the degree of hydro-deoxygenation and the product distribution. Lastly, an economic analysis will determine the profitability of the process. The new HDO process will result in a higher value product than biodiesel, while avoiding the near-zero-value by-product glycerol. It will also operate on 100% algae oil and not need to be blended with a petroleum feedstock (as do oils from existing HDO processes). Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The commercial application would be a new process for converting algae-derived oil into renewable diesel as a major component of aviation fuel. An additional benefit includes the ability to take advantage of a free CO2 source and convert this greenhouse gas into a useful liquid fuel
