Research abstract

The Phase I effort was focused on developing a detailed methodology for conducting training in the reduced manning environment anticipated for new and evolving 21st century ship classes (e.g., DD(X)). The Phase I objective was to research and design aprototype training system employing closed-loop adaptive training technology as the enabling technology for supporting training in an optimized manning environment. A training infrastructure was defined that will accommodate individual and team trainingrequirements within a closed-loop adaptive training system employing a seamless combination of adaptive interactive multimedia instruction (IMI)- and simulation-based intelligent tutoring. This technology will support knowledge acquisition using adaptiveIMI and supervised skills practice using simulation-based intelligent tutoring, all within a common architecture employing a unified learner model. The Phase I effort culminated in the delivery of a final report that addressed three main topics:closed-loop adaptive training concept of operation, closed-loop adaptive training architecture, and a description of the proposed Phase II prototype. The Phase II objective is to develop the prototype training system, targeting the ASW/ASUW Tactical AirController (ASTAC) curriculum as the domain of interest. The research conducted under this SBIR will contribute directly to the development of a fully functional closed-loop adaptive training system that will support individual and team training within atotal-ship training environment. We anticipate that the technology developed under this SBIR topic will be immediately transitioned to the DD(X) program and the Navy's shore-based training infrastructure (initially supporting the ASTAC curriculum). Inaddition, this technology can be applied to address a wide range of other military and civilian training requirements where both knowledge and skill acquisition are essential. Domains that might be addressed by this technology include: air controloperations, power plant operations, medical diagnosis, etc.
