Research abstract

To achieve Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), ship-borne systems require an automated means to acquire environmental, weather, and oceanographic information as a service for improved processing and integration of potential environmental risks and hazards that affect naval operations.  The proposed U.S. Navy Integrated Environmental Model System (INTEMS) will provide the automated data service for these ship-borne systems to request and obtain the best current and forecasted Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC) data required by those systems’ processes. INTEMS will: Obtain, process, aggregate, and assimilate locally collected METOC data to generate current and short-term forecast or “nowcast” gridded datasets. Access, ingest, and process METOC model based gridded forecast datasets regularly from military and civilian METOC production centers when communications are available.   Maintain a global climatological METOC gridded dataset. Provide RESTful Application Programming Interface (API) data services for ship-borne systems to obtain the required METOC information from INTEMS. Use innovative Machine Learning (ML) analysis techniques to generate a best forecast response among the available gridded datasets, upon receiving an API request from ship-borne systems for current or forecast METOC data.
