Research abstract

Future, multi-domain operational environments, in which patient care needs may exceed healthcare provider capacity, will benefit from tools that enable novice, non-medical personnel to correctly perform emergency hemorrhage control procedures. InnoVital Systems, building upon a successful layperson extremity tourniquet development effort which saw lay participants successful apply the novel tourniquet without any training 93% of the time, proposes to continue developing an improved, user-friendly junctional tourniquet that may be quickly and correctly applied by users with little or no training. In the Phase II effort, we will revise the Phase I design, transition the prototype to pre-production level, conduct bench tests and user studies aimed at demonstrating its usability and effectiveness in different conditions, and develop a regulatory plan. Our unique experience with the development and commercialization of procedural tools for pre-hospital and in-hospital trauma care, in-house emergency medicine and device engineering capabilities, and relationships with relevant industry partners puts InnoVital in the best position for delivering a useful and marketable medical device.
